2 Discs, Vocal, Instrumental, and Spoken Word. This important collection is one of only two cds available with historic recordings of the actual Shakers singing their own music. The recordings on this disc were made between 1960 and 1980. They illustrate the divergent musical traditions of the Canterbury, New Hampshire and Sabbathday Lake, Maine, Shaker communities. The Sabbathday Lake Shakers sing in a very traditional manner, unaccompanied by instruments; whereas the Canterbury Shakers used organ for accompaniment, and allowed outsiders to sing with them. The spoken word recordings on this disc are interviews with Shaker sisters. Roger Hall’s informative liner notes make this an excellent package. Strongly recommended.
